‘Do I Have to Get New Appliances with My Kitchen Renovation?’
One of the most common questions kitchen renovation contractors get is whether or not homeowners need to buy all-new appliances to go with their newly updated kitchen. The answer is: “No, but …”
Obviously, there’s nothing that requires homeowners to add a new refrigerator, stove, dishwasher, microwave, or even a new sink to their brand new kitchen. But as the old saying goes, “In for a dime, in for a dollar.”
All-New Kitchen
New appliances are certainly a bonus if you are updating your kitchen, especially if your current appliances are old and outdated. If you have old appliances in a brand new kitchen, they are going to look glaringly out of place once the project is completed. And that will take away from the “wow factor” you want to create when you show off your newly-renovated kitchen to your family, friends, and neighbors.
If you have relatively new appliances, it’s fine to reinstall them in your new kitchen if you want. In most cases, they will need to be disconnected and temporarily moved out of the space during construction. So care needs to be taken to prevent them from being damaged.
Budget Considerations
Another consideration is your budget. If you can afford all-new appliances for your state-of-the-art kitchen, then by all means include them in your renovation plan. But if your budget is limited, one option is to simply replace appliances when you can. While it may take months or even years to completely transform your kitchen, in the long run it will be worth it.
Remember if you are ordering new appliances that scheduled delivery should coincide with the completion of the renovation, not the onset. New appliances that arrive before work begins will just be in the way and will need to be stored somewhere safe until the project is finished.
A better plan is to simply ask the supplier to deliver your new appliances during the last day or two of construction. That way your contractor can install them safely and reveal your brand new kitchen all at once.
